Network Maintenance Contracts

Because nothing says “we have got you the balls now you suckers” than looking at the renewal bill on the maintenance contract for your network hardware.

Seriously. It’s usually cheaper to simply pile up the kit in the cupboard instead. But, no. You need software maintenance. Otherwise known as extortion – as in “we left some bugs in the software, you have to keep paying if you want things to work’

Am I right ?

Fuck yeah. It’s ridiculous that 3 years maintenance can cost twice as much as replacing the bloody hardware outright would (I’m talking to YOU, Cisco!)

My favourite bit is how companies offer enormous discounts off list price, but that 20% support contract? Yeah that stays at 20% of LIST.

The problem is the long life cycle of networking hardware and the high annual maintenance costs. In the server world you can buy hw with 3 years of maintenance contract and after that period you can do a capex per opex exercise create a project to renew the obsolete hw and buy a brand new powerful server with 3 years of maintenance investing less than the 3 years renewal cost. With this approach you can have almost all your assets under maintenance. In my case capex is not a problem and i have a lot of restrictions over opex (freezed year to year).
